MIAMI, Florida, July 3, 2009.- Peru defeated
Canada 3-1 (29-27, 25-13, 16-25, 25-21)
advancing to a match for the fifth position in
the Eighth Women’s Pan American Cup being held
at University of Miami’s BankUnited Center.
The Peruvians, who outscored their rivals 6-1 in
the aces category but were overmatched 13-6 by
their taller opponents in the blocking
department, next play the winner of the
Argentina vs. Costa Rica match scheduled for
later on Friday.
Yulissa Zamdio topped the scoring of Peru with
19 points, including four blocks. Leyla Chihuan
and Jessenia Uceda added 13 points apiece and
Patricia Soto and Carla Ortiz contributed 12 and
9 respectively.
Tiffany Dodds led Canada with 14 points
including two blocks and one ace, Tammy Mahon
added 13 and Brittney Page contributed four
blocks among her 11 tallies.
“We are a little bit tired after many
consecutive days of playing not only physically
but also mentally,” said Chihuan, the captain of
Peru. “We still need to work harder in our game
and in achieving our goal of putting back Peru
in the high place it had in the past.”
“We played a good match but when you don’t play
consistent you are in trouble,” said Arnd
Ludwig, the coach of Canada. “We need to be more
consistent for the whole set and not in parts of
it.”
